As an ecclesiastical association of the faithful, it is affiliated to the International Alliance of Catholic Knights and as such recognized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity as a lay brotherhood.

history

At the end of the 1990s, some members of the Irish brotherhood Knights of Saint Columbanus met with American brothers of the Knights of Columbus in the English-speaking parish of St. Anthony for monthly meetings. The brothers were employed in Brussels as diplomatic staff or at international EU institutions. From these meetings the desire to found an international brotherhood developed. After some time they were joined by brothers from New Zealand ( Knights of the Southern Cross - New Zealand ), Nigeria ( Knights of Saint Mulumba ) and UK ( Knights of Saint Columba ). The official foundation day is April 28, 2001, the Secretary General of the International Alliance of Catholic Knights led and supported the new beginning of this Catholic brotherhood. The brotherhood chose St. Thomas More as its patron saint.

Goal setting

In April 2001 the new order was passed, from which the aims and purposes of the union of believers emerge. The brotherhood supports the missionary mandate of the Catholic Church, it works in the spirit of the Church and supports the families within the parishes . Under the motto “Family, Brotherhood and Faith”, the Brotherhood wants to strengthen community within the parish and promote a sense of community. As brothers they have a special responsibility for the apostolic life and, as an association of believers, strive to fulfill the following tasks: proclaiming the Holy Scriptures to all Christians, supporting the clergy all over the world, fighting injustice, working for a moral and social welfare and promotion of the education and training of young people and they want to work on the foundation of charity , justice and fraternity with all organizations that support these goals.

organization

The brotherhood is organized on the model of the Columbus Knights, Knights of St. Columba and the Knights of Columbanus. It consists of one chapter and is part of the international parish of St. Antonius in Kraainem in Belgium. Only confirmed men over the age of 18 can become members. The admission of female members is still in the decision-making process. With their membership, the brothers undertake to serve the Church and to shape their lives in the faith of the Roman Catholic Church.
