The Knights of Saint Columbanus (German: Ritter des Saint Columbanus ) are a knightly brotherhood in the Roman Catholic Church . They were founded in Ireland in 1919 .

history

The Brotherhood of the Knights of St. Columbanus was founded in 1915 by Canon James K. O'Neill (1857–1928) in Belfast . Its founder was a particular admirer of Pope Leo XIII. (1878–1903) published the social encyclical Rerum novarum and endeavored to address social issues in a practical way. In addition, he was inspired by the opinion published by Pope Pius X (1903–1914) on the lay apostolate (see encyclical Il fermo proposito ) and Catholic Action . Therefore he wanted to found a corresponding association of believers. It began with lectures on Catholic Social Doctrine and concluded with the founding of the Knights of St. Columbanus in 1915. The motto of the brotherhood is "Instaurare omnia in Christo" (German: Renew everything in Christ) and refers to the letter to the Ephesians 4:24 EU .
