Door-and-hinge conversation

Door-and-hinge conversation in pedagogy is a specific form of parenting conversation . Sometimes the term is also used for other short conversations .

Phrase

The expression corresponds to the phrase "between the door and hinge ", where the hinge means the door hinge . According to a dictionary from 1793, the expression "to be or stuck between the door and hinge" still meant "to be between two equally unpleasant cases". According to Duden, “between the door and the hinge” means an “urgent, only fleetingly coincident” incident.

In addition to the parents' evenings , a large part of the contact with the parents takes place in everyday educational life during the handover of their children. This form of parent-teacher communication is the most common in day-care centers , elementary schools and youth welfare institutions in particular . Sometimes there are also short conversations, which the parents as well as the educators can aim for. Since these conversations very often take place between the door and the hinge (the educators in the room, the parents in front of them), this term has become common and is also used for all parenting conversations that came about by chance and are structured.

Door-and-hinge discussions are seen as the lowest-threshold form of parenting work, as they come about without formal initialization and are easy to establish. As a rule, the parents have the option to end the conversation at any time. The time budget is usually very short and can be interrupted at any time. Door-and-hinge discussions are also often not conducted with full attention, as other activities have to be carried out at the same time (e.g. exercising the duty of supervision ). A door-and-hinge conversation usually remains unprotected or the educators join in hours later. Door-and-hinge discussions are therefore not suitable for in-depth discussions of problems.
