Turkish print, 1530

The term Turkish threat describes the horror image of the expanding Ottoman Empire that was widespread among the European public during the 15th to 17th centuries in the wake of the Turkish wars as the threat to the Christian West from an Islamic power. Turkic prints or Turcica are pamphlets used to warn of the "Turkish threat" with the help of the newly invented letterpress printing. The term "Turkish threat" was used from the end of the 19th century in German-language regional historiography and increasingly from the 1950s in Austrian historiography about the Habsburgs .
