Almut Höfert

Almut Höfert (* 1967 in Bad Bevensen ) is a German medieval historian.

Life

From 1986 to 1994 she studied medieval, modern and recent history and Islamic studies (Arabic / Turkish) in Bonn , Cairo and Freiburg im Breisgau . From 1994 to 1995 she worked on regional history projects on Baden history. From 1995 to 1996 she was a research assistant at the History Department of the University of Würzburg . After completing her doctorate (1996–2001) at the European University Institute , she was an assistant (2001–2005, 2007–2010) at the Department of History at the University of Basel . From 2005 to 2006 she was a visiting researcher at the American University in Cairo . From 2006 to 2007 she was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . From 2011 to 2018 she held a professorship from the Swiss National Science Foundation at the History Department of the University of Zurich . Since 2018 she has been Professor of Medieval History at the Institute for History at the University of Oldenburg .

Her main research interests are the empire and caliphate in the Latin, Arab and Byzantine early and high Middle Ages, the cultural history of religion in the Latin, Byzantine and Arabic early and high Middle Ages, orders of knowledge in the Middle Ages and in the 16th century, travelogues of the Middle Ages and the 16th century, Christian and European representations of Islam, gender history and methods of transcultural history.
