Vilhelm Marstrand
Vilhelm Nicolai Marstrand , also Wilhelm Nicolai Marstrand , (born December 24, 1810 in Copenhagen , † March 25, 1873 in Copenhagen) was a Danish painter and draftsman.
Life
Marstrand was a student at the Royal Danish Art Academy in his hometown of Copenhagen from 1825 to 1833 and in 1836 - supported by his teachers - switched to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich via Berlin and Dresden . From there he went on a long study trip to Rome via Switzerland , where he studied the ancient masters. Stops on this trip were Turin , Pisa and Siena . From Rome he went on several excursions in the vicinity of the city with Constantin Hansen and Jørgen Roed .
For the most narrative painter of the Danish Golden Age , genre painting was a focus of his work. In the implementation of Ludvig Holberg's comic material, in particular , he demonstrated not only artistic skill but also a sense of humor.
In 1848 he was appointed professor. From 1853 to 1859 and again from 1863 to 1873 Marstrand was entrusted with the management of the art academy.
