Jørgen Roed
Jørgen Roed (born January 13, 1808 in Ringsted , † August 9, 1888 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish portrait , architecture and genre painter.
life and work
Jørgen Roed was born as the son of Peder Jørgensen Roed and his wife Ellen Hansdatter Jensen in Ringsted on the island of Zealand. The father owned a farm and a distillery. The drawing teacher Jens Jørgen Fyhn's enthusiasm for drawing and painting was already so pronounced during his school days that after his confirmation in 1822 his parents sent him to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) in Copenhagen.
He began his studies with private lessons with the portrait painter Hans Hansen, with whose son Constantin Hansen a strong friendship developed. Roed's studies under Hansen consisted in copying other works of art; his first exhibition work in 1824 was an angel's head after a copy based on a work by Raphael . His first - independently - exhibited work was a portrait of his drawing teacher from school in 1826.
In addition to teaching with Hansen, studies at the academy in freehand drawing began in 1822 and in 1825 in the plaster class. He exhibited for the first time at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1824 and then exhibited regularly throughout his life. After Hans Hansen died in 1828, Roed and Constantin Hansen became students of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg , the father of the Golden Age of Danish painting, until 1833 . Roed developed into a solid genre and architectural painter during his studies. His works won a small silver medal at the academy in 1831, combined with a cash prize, and in 1833 the large silver medal. A study trip took him to Fredriksvern in Norway in 1831 .
He proved his talent as an architectural painter by winning competitions organized by the artists' association ( art forums ). He won the competition with the motto “public place or building” in 1835 with his painting View of Frederiksborg Castle: The Carousel Gate (Parti af Frederiksborg Slot, Karusselporten) (see picture).
Roed received a two-year travel grant from the academy in 1837, which was later extended for another two years. He used these scholarships for a four-year stay in Italy until 1841. His interest in landscape and, above all, architectural motifs came to fruition during the trip to Naples and the surrounding area in the company of Constantin Hansen and, in part, Wilhelm Marstrand . He showed his understanding of the Italian Renaissance and especially of Raphael in a copy of Raphael's Coronation of Mary (Rome, Vatican Pinacoteca ) as well as in some altarpieces. The main work of his Italian period, however, is the prison courtyard of the Palazzo del Bargello . This picture unites the architecture with a group of people in a typical genre scene.
Upon his return to Denmark in 1842, Roed concentrated his efforts on an academic career at the university. His recording piece was a portrait of the paper manufacturer Johan Christian Drewsen (1843). The following year he became a member of the Academy as a portraitist with the portrait of Herman Wilhelm Bissen . In addition to the professorship for painting, portraits and altarpieces were now his real livelihood. In September 1850 and again from April to November 1851 he traveled to Dresden to make a copy of Raphael's Sistine Madonna .
Further trips led from November 1861 to March 1862, first to London for the World's Fair , where works by him were shown, and then on to Paris, Florence and Rome. Back at home in Copenhagen, he was appointed professor of painting at the academy. In 1871 he traveled again to Italy (Pompeii, Capri, Rome), in July and August 1873 to Berlin and to Paris for the World Exhibition from August to September 1878. His teaching activity at the Academy lasted until October 1887. When he resigned, he received the Title Etatsråd . Jørgen Roed died on August 8, 1888 at the age of 80 in Copenhagen. He was buried in the Ringsted cemetery.
family
Before beginning his trip to Italy in 1837, he met Emilie Mathilde Kruse (1806-1894) and became engaged to her. After his return they married on May 22, 1842. They had two children, son Holger Roed (1846–1874), who also became a painter, and daughter Helena (Helena Nyblom, née Roed) (1843–1926), a Swedish- Danish writer. She was married to Carl Rupert Nyblom, an art and literary historian and member (chair 14) of the Swedish Academy .
