Life
Albert Küchler was the son of master carpenter Christian Küchler and his wife Mette Cathrine Andreasdatter Terkelsen. Küchler began an apprenticeship as a carpenter with his father, but was then able to convince him of his desire to become an artist. So he came to the Copenhagen Art Academy in 1816 . At first in the freehand and model class, he then, like most future painters of his generation, became a student of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg . At the beginning of the 1820s he received the first silver medals for his works. By winning the great gold medal in 1829, combined with a travel grant, Küchler was able to continue his studies abroad.
Küchler's path led to Munich in 1830 and then on to Rome, where he soon belonged to the Danish community to which, in addition to the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen z. For example, the painters Constantin Hansen , Martinus Rørbye , Wilhelm Marstrand , Detlev Conrad Blunck and Jørgen Sonne as well as the architect Gottlieb Bindesbøll and also writers counted. Christian Winther and Hans Christian Andersen should be mentioned here in particular . In addition to his artistic work, he was the librarian of the Danish library in Rome from 1833 to 1840. While he initially mainly created genre scenes close to the Nazarenes , religious paintings became these in the 1840s.
Küchler converted to Catholicism in 1844 and in 1851 he joined the Franciscan Order under the name Pietro. He then lived in Rome in the monastery of San Bonaventura on the Palatine Hill , only interrupted by his stay in a Silesian monastery from 1852 to 1855. With the approval of the Pope, he could continue to be artistically active, but now it was exclusively religious pictures such as altarpieces or copies of ancient art. In 1877 he was appointed a member of the Danish Art Academy. Albert Küchler died in Rome in 1886 and was buried in the Campo Santo Teutonico cemetery.
