Life

Blunck was the son of the ferry lessee Hans Blunck and his wife Dorothea Hansen. At the age of 16, Blunck came to the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen in 1814 and stayed there until 1818. Then, on the advice of his teachers, he went to Munich and was a student of Johann Peter von Langer at the academy there for two years .

In the early summer of 1820 Blunck returned to Copenhagen and re-enrolled at the local art academy; his teachers were the painters Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and Johann Ludwig Lund (1777–1867). In 1827 Blunck took part in the great annual exhibition of the art academy and one of his works was honored with a gold medal.

In 1828 Blunck began an extensive study trip that took him to Rome via Berlin , Dresden and Munich . According to his own statements, he was mainly inspired by the works of Perugino and Raphael . In Rome he also made the acquaintance of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen , who also introduced him to his circle of artists. Blunck was also accepted as a member of the Ponte Molle Society . His years in Rome were only interrupted by spending almost a year in Venice and Florence .

In the early summer of 1838 Blunck returned to Copenhagen and lived there for two years. In 1840 he went to Berlin and the following year to Munich. Between 1842 and 1846 Blunck lived and worked in Vienna; a time that he (according to his own statement) did not like very much due to the political situation, but was artistically productive.

In 1846 Blunck returned to Berlin and went to Vienna again for almost a year the following year. The painter Christian Carl Magnussen persuaded Blunck to take part in the Schleswig-Holstein survey as a member of a volunteer corps. During this time, too, Blunck was creative as a painter.
