Martinus Christian Wesseltoft Rørbye (born May 17, 1803 in Drammen , Norway , † August 29, 1848 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish painter. He was an important artist of Denmark's Golden Age ( den danske guldalder ) and known for genre work as well as landscapes and architectural images.

Life

Martinus Rørbye was the son of the Danish government official Ferdinand Henrik Rørbye, who worked in Drammen in Norway, and his wife Frederikke Eleonore Cathrine de Stockfleth. After Norway and Denmark separated in 1814, the family moved back to Denmark in 1815. It became evident early on that Martinus had a talent for drawing and painting.

Rørbye studied from 1820 at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen as a pupil of Christian August Lorentzen and also received lessons from Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg , the central figure of the Golden Age. As Eckersberg's favorite student, he was carefully trained and had the skills to create true portraits of nature. Like his mentor, Rørbye could often be found in Copenhagen harbor or in the vicinity of the city with a sketchbook. He exhibited for the first time at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1824 and then exhibited regularly throughout his life.

Rørbye's early work consisted mainly of city scenes from Copenhagen, he also made landscapes on the island of Zealand and portraits. As early as 1830, his journey to his home country Norway led him to the Jutland peninsula for the first time . He came to places that Danish artists normally do not go, portrayed the special light of Jutland in his works and has since been considered the first Skagen painter . He still had an influence on the work of Michael Ancher in the 1870s , when he became the founder of the artists' colony in Skagen alongside PS Krøyer .

Rørbye has won several silver and small gold medals from the Academy. A travel grant enabled him to travel to Italy in 1834. He came to Rome via the Netherlands and France, where he soon belonged to the Danish community, to which, in addition to the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, was the central figure. For example, the painters Constantin Hansen , Albert Küchler , Wilhelm Marstrand , Detlev Conrad Blunck and Jørgen Sonne as well as the architect Gottlieb Bindesbøll counted. This first stay in Italy lasted until 1837, interrupted in 1835 by a trip together with Bindesbøll to Greece and Constantinople in the Ottoman Empire . Various works from this period bear witness to further trips, for example to Sorrento , the Sabine Mountains and Sicily . For his work En Tyrkisk Notar, Som Afslutter En Aegtepagt (A Turkish notary drafting a marriage contract) he received the Thorvaldsen Medal, awarded for the first time in 1837. In 1838 he became a member of the Danish Art Academy, the work he produced for the recording was Scene af det offentlige liv i Orienten […] (scene from public life in the Orient) .

Rørbye married Rose Frederikke Schiøtt (1810–1859) on August 29, 1839, the daughter of Counselor Christian Frederik Schiøtt and Charlotte Johanne, née. Schack. His poor health led him to travel to Italy again that fall, hoping to regain strength. In 1841 he returned home. In addition to painting, he gave private lessons. a. Lorenz Frølich and Christen Dalsgaard (1824–1907). In 1844 he was appointed professor at the academy with a teaching position at the model school. His health deteriorated and he died on his wedding day, August 29, 1848, in Copenhagen, leaving behind his young wife and several small children. His grave is on Holmens Kirkegård.
