The T-4 ( Russian Т-4 ) is a Soviet and later Russian chain tractor, which was manufactured in Altaiski Traktorny Sawod (short АТЗ or ATZ) from 1964 . In almost 35 years of construction, around 380,000 copies of the vehicle were produced, which replaced the predecessor DT-54 , which had been built in parallel for a long time .

Production of the T-4 began in the Altaiski Traktorny Zavod in 1964. The chain tractor was built there unchanged until 1970, with four different variants being created. These were named T-4-S1 to T-4-S4 and differed only in the built-in hydraulic system . This varied in the number and use of the built-in working cylinders, with the -S3 also being built without any hydraulics. By 1970, 33,900 copies of all versions of these vehicles had rolled off the production line.

From 1970 the modernized version T-4A was produced. This variant mainly differed in the engine used. The previously installed large-volume six-cylinder diesel engine received an increase in output from 110 PS (81 kW) to 130 PS (96 kW) and was now referred to as the A 01 M. In addition, the T-4AP model was also built on the basis of the T-4A. This vehicle also has front hydraulics to be able to attach and adjust a dozer blade. Accordingly, the tractor was used as a bulldozer .

Production of the T-4A and its modifications was discontinued in 1998. By then, another 343,000 tractors had been built, in addition to the almost 34,000 of the first version T-4. Even today the Altaiski Traktorny Sawod still builds chain tractors, for example the similar, but fundamentally revised model Altai-130 .

The T-4 and T-4A were often criticized, especially the comparison to other, similar track tractors from Soviet production was often poor. The semi-rigid track chassis ensured that the machine had extremely poor driving characteristics. In particular, there was virtually no damping on frozen floors or other solid surfaces. There were also defects in the drive pinions. In addition, the tractor had a complicated structure and was difficult to maintain. The top speed of just 9 km / h was too low for transport tasks. Often the vehicles were only used for plowing on heavy soils and were not used at all for the rest of the time.
