The T-70 ( Russian T-70 ) is a Soviet and later Moldavian chain tractor , which was produced from 1974 in the Kishinevsky Traktorny Sawod (German: Kischinauer Traktorwerk, short КТЗ or KTS). It is the successor to the similar T-54W and is technically based on the well-known MTZ-80 wheel tractor from the Minski Traktorny Sawod .

Vehicle history

The two previous models, the T-50W and T-54W, were chain tractors and were based on wheel tractors from the Minski Traktorny Sawod. When production of the MTZ-80 began in 1974, a new model, the T-70, was also introduced at KTS. Essential components of the wheel tractor were taken over, including the engine and manual transmission (without additional reduction). The caterpillar chassis was lengthened and widened compared to its predecessor. In addition, the tractor received a different cab and bonnet than the T-54W during the production period.

Different versions of the vehicle were built, which differed in different details. These are among others:

  • T-70A - For use in horticulture, also suitable for general agriculture.
  • T-70S - Intended for growing sugar beets, built from 1975 to 1988.
  • T-70SM - Modernized version of the T-70S model, built from 1988 to the end of production.
  • T-70W - Special version for viticulture , suitable for negotiating steeper slopes.
  • T-70W-Ch - Special version for hop growing.

Between 1986 and 1990, an average of around 12,000 tractors were built by KTS each year. Even after the collapse of the Soviet Union , the tractor continued to be manufactured; the manufacturing plant was now located in the newly founded state of Moldova . Production ended in 2008 after 34 years as the company was declared bankrupt that year.

In 2014 a company was founded in Chisinau with the plan to manufacture the T-70 again. It is not known whether this project was realized.
