The Minski Traktorny Sawod was founded in 1946 by decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR under Josef Stalin . It should Chain transfers are made, the start of production was intended for the 1948th However, the first product of the new plant was not a tractor, but a plow , of which just under 300 copies left the factory from March 1948. Another product from the first few years were starter engines. These small single-cylinder gasoline engines took on the function of a starter on agricultural machinery and similar vehicles .

Work on the plant's first wheel tractor began in 1949, but mass production of the MTZ-2 did not start until 1953. In the meantime, the KD-35 and KT-12 chain tractors were introduced in 1950 and 1951, respectively , the former had been in series production in the Lipetski Traktorny Sawod since 1947 . In 1950, the plant also started regular operations. In the 1950s, the Minski Traktorny Sawod manufactured various tracked vehicles used as forest tractors in addition to wheel tractors. Including the type TDT-40, of which almost 13,000 had been built by 1957. In the same year the 50,000 left. Tractor the factory. From 1957 wheel tractors of the new type MTZ-5 were also manufactured.

In the years that followed, the plant's production increased sharply. 1961 became the 200,000. Tractor built in 1963 of the 300,000. and in 1966 already the 500,000. Vehicle. In 1966 the Minsky Traktorny Sawod was also awarded the Order of Lenin , and in 1971 the Order of the October Revolution.

On November 5, 1972, the millionth tractor rolled off the production lines in Minsk. In 1974 the production of the MTZ-80 and the MTZ-82, still offered today, began. In 1976 the work received the name of Lenin as an additional part of the work name as an award for its 30th anniversary . In 1982, prototypes of the more powerful MTZ-100 were developed, and in 1984 the two millionth tractor rolled off the assembly line.

Various new tractors from Minsk came onto the market in the 1990s. In 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev paid the company a visit. On June 8, 1995, the three millionth tractor rolled off the production line. In 2006, on the occasion of the company's 60th anniversary, the company produced the prototype of a large tractor with an output of 450 hp (331 kW). In the following years the model range was revised and expanded. In 2010 the series production of the currently most powerful series tractor from Minsk, the Belarus-3522 with 355 PS (261 kW) began. The company has been operating as an open joint stock company (Russian OAO) since 2014. As of 2016, over 3.8 million tractors were built and in 2015 around 17,500 people were employed. In addition to the main plant in Minsk, there are various other branch companies in Belarus that also manufacture other products such as consumer goods.

The brand name Belarus

Minski Traktorny Sawod has been using the Belarus brand name for its tractors since the MTZ-2 model from 1953 to the present day . At the same time, some models made by other Soviet tractor manufacturers that were exported from the Soviet Union to western countries or overseas were also sold under this brand name - although they had no relation to the Minsk plant.

One example is the DT-75 chain tractor from the Volgogradski Traktorny Zavod , the manufacturing designation of which was retained but was now Belarus DT-75 . The JuMZ-6 from the Juschny Maschinostroitelny Sawod came under the designation Belarus-6 and later also Belarus-611 via the foreign trade organization Traktoroexport to western countries. Also as Belarus, but with a completely changed type designation, copies of the large tractor Kirovets K-700 were now sold as Belarus 7010 and the T-150K ( Belarus 1770 ). The number of units, specific export targets, time frames and the motivation behind this approach have not yet been proven.

Sponsorship

The Minsk Tractor Works are sponsoring the Belarusian Erstligafußballteams Partizan Minsk (Belarusian: МТЗ-РІПА Менск (Менскі трактарны завод - Рэспубліканскі інстытут прафэсійнай адукацыі) ), formerly known as FK tractor known.
