The MTZ-80 ( Russian МТЗ-80 , mostly transcribed MTS-80 in German-speaking countries , also known in combination with the brand name Belarus ) is a tractor that has been mass-produced in the Minski Traktorny Sawod since 1973/74 . Almost 1.5 million copies were built up to 1995 alone. The GDR imported tractors of this type from 1977, and one year later also the MTZ-82 with all-wheel drive .

In 1966 the Council of Ministers of the USSR issued an order to the Minski Traktorny Zavod to develop a wheel tractor with 75 to 80 HP and 14 kilonewtons of tractive power. The MTZ-50 , which had already been mass- produced, served as the basis, and in 1972 tests were carried out with prototypes. Series production began in 1974, according to other sources as early as the fourth quarter of 1973.

Even if the look of the MTZ-80 from the first years is very similar to its predecessor except for the radiator grille and minor changes to the cabin, significant changes have been made. In addition to increasing the engine output by 25 hp, an additional reduction was installed. This doubled the number of available gears or working speeds. The top speed rose to almost 35 km / h, the clutch was revised. In addition, the factory revised the differential lock , the hydraulic system and the PTO shaft , which could now be switched between two working speeds.

From 1979 the vehicle was delivered with a completely new cabin. By using significantly more glass, all-round visibility was greatly improved, and the driver also had significantly more space available. The side and rear windows could now be opened, a heater was installed and various other improvements made. The GDR imported the MTZ-80 from 1977, and from 1978 also the MTZ-82. At the end of 1988 there were 9,751 MTZ-80 machines in the fleet of the agricultural production cooperatives , of which almost 90% were imported before and only a little over 10% after 1980.

The factory has been building the improved version MTZ-80.1 since 1995, which, however, shows only minor changes. Up to and including 1995, 1,496,000 copies of the MTZ-80 of all versions (including the MTZ-82) were produced, which makes the vehicle the most successful product of the Minski Traktorny Sawod.

Model variants

Over the decades there have been and are model versions of the MTZ-80 adapted for different purposes. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union , more and more modernized versions have been offered, which differ particularly visually and also follow a different numbering scheme.

  • MTZ-80 - basic version, manufactured from 1974 to 1995.
  • MTZ-80.1 - Basic version manufactured since 1995, continuously equipped with a modernized driver's cab.
  • MTZ-82 - model with all-wheel drive, from which in turn own versions were derived.
  • MTZ-80L - A version specially equipped for forest work. Various minor changes were made to the engine and larger wheels were installed to increase the top speed to 36 km / h.
  • MTZ-80W - Built for use in root crops and equipped with a modified gear.
  • MTZ-80Ch - three-wheeled version for growing cotton , which was built and used in Uzbekistan in the Tashkentski Traktorny Zavod .
  • MTZ-80ChM - An MTZ-80X with a revised engine.
  • MTZ-80Ch.1 - Updated version of the MTZ-80Ch, as of 2016 still offered by the manufacturer.
  • MTZ-90 - export version with 90 HP (66 kW) power and a single top.
  • MTZ-900.3 - Completely revised model with 84.3 HP (62 kW) power and new body.

The Kishinevsky Traktorny Sawod built the T-70 from 1974 to 2008, a version of the tractor with caterpillar tracks.
