The MTZ-50 ( Russian МТЗ-50 , mostly transcribed MTS-50 in German-speaking countries , also known in combination with the brand name Belarus ) is a tractor that was produced in the Minski Traktorny Sawod from 1961 onwards . Around 1.25 million units were produced in 24 years of construction, including an all-wheel drive version , the MTZ-52 . The GDR imported larger numbers of the vehicle since 1967.

The Lipezki Traktorny Sawod also produced the T-40 wheel tractor, which was located a little below the MTZ-50, from 1961 onwards . It was produced in similar numbers until 1995, but did not come to the GDR.

Project planning for a new tug based on the MTZ-5 began in the mid-1950s. From 1956, the D50 diesel engine was developed, which was to be used in the new tractor model. In 1958 the factory produced a number of prototypes, which were then subjected to extensive testing.

In November 1959, the Council of Ministers of the USSR issued instructions to include both the MTZ-50 and the MTZ-52 in series production. The stipulation was a production from 1961 or 1962 for the MTZ-52 and an annual production of 75,000 machines for 1965. To achieve this goal, an engine plant with an annual capacity of 120,000 diesel engines was built from 1960.

The series production began in 1961, the production of the all-wheel drive version in 1964. In 1970 a revision followed, which above all brought an increase in the engine output to 60 HP (44 kW). But a new silencer was also installed and the front of the tractor was redesigned.

By 1985 a total of 1,256,000 tractors of the types MTZ-50 and MTZ-52 and their versions had been built, i.e. an average of around 52,300 units per year. The vehicles were replaced by the MTZ-500 model and its derivatives. The GDR imported around 65,000 tractors from Minsk by 1989, including exactly 30,000 of the MTZ-50 and MTZ-52 types by June 1975.

A very similar tractor model with increased performance, the MTZ-80, has been manufactured in parallel since 1974 .

Model versions

Various versions of the tractor were developed over the course of the production period.

  • MTZ-50 - basic model, built in series from 1961.
  • MTZ-50R - designed for work in rice fields
  • MTZ-50K - for working on steep embankments, a separate version was built, which was not produced in Minsk, but in Tbilisi . Also known as the T-50K.
  • MTZ-50Ch - "three-wheeled" version from 1969 for the cotton harvest in Uzbekistan , was produced from 1977 in the Tashkentski Traktorny Sawod . The two front wheels were moved together to within a few centimeters, and an even slower crawler gear was installed.
  • MTZ-52 - version with all-wheel drive.
  • T-50W or T-54W - chain tractors for viticulture, built in the Kishinjowski Traktorny Sawod in Moldova.
  • MTZ-50L - model with a single cylinder petrol engine as the starter.
  • MTZ-50 "Super" - From the mid-1960s there was a revised version, including an engine output increased to 60 HP (44 kW).
  • MTZ-60 - export version with an output of 65 PS (48 kW).
