The Lipezki Traktorny Sawod ( German  Lipezkier Traktorwerk ; Russian Липецкий тракторный завод , abbreviated as ЛТЗ / LTZ, in German also transcribed as LTS ) is a former Soviet and now Russian manufacturer of tractors . The company, which was founded in 1943, is located in Lipetsk , Central Russia and currently operates under the name OAO Lipezki Traktor (Russian ОАО Липецкий трактор ).

Company history

During the Second World War there was a serious shortage of tractors in the Soviet Union . Since these were needed as tractors not only for agriculture but also for the army, the Soviet State Defense Committee decided in 1943 to found a new tractor factory in Lipetsk.

In order to realize the plans, designers and technicians in particular were withdrawn from the Red Army . In order not to have to build new factory buildings, the factory was housed on the site of the former Stankostroi company . At the same time, the vehicle construction institute NATI constructed a light chain tractor with the gasoline engine of the ZIS-5 truck. This vehicle, known as the "Kirovets-35", was completed in early June 1944. Although the name suggests otherwise, the tractor was never built near Kirovets in Saint Petersburg. The designation was only given on an honorary basis.

Serial production of the Kirovets-35 began in the same year, with the first rolling off the production line in December 1944. The petrol engine was a temporary solution, as no suitable diesel engine was available. A prototype with a diesel engine was built by the American company Caterpillar in September . However, this was still in the test phase. It was not until 1947 that the mass production of the model with a diesel engine was approved, which was now called the KD-35 (KD for short for Kirovets Diesel). The production of the tractor with gasoline engine remained low in the meantime: in 1945 only 64 copies could be completed.

Mass production of the diesel version KD-35 began in 1947. In the years that followed, the model was briefly built in the newly founded Minski Traktorny Sawod . In 1950, the Lipetsk factory developed the KD-35 into the KDP-35. It was specially built for use in sugar beet fields and was manufactured in series until 1958. However, since this model repeatedly had defects in the chassis that could not be remedied, production was finally stopped.

Both the KD-35 and the version for beet harvest, the KDP-35, were imported into the GDR. At least 246 units came to the Soviet occupation zone in 1949 , and vehicles were also delivered later. This made them probably the only LTS tractors that officially came to Germany.

As a replacement for the KD-35, the chain tractor T-38 was manufactured from 1958 , which was produced in various versions until 1973. A total of around 114,000 KD-35 and KDP-35 chain tractors were built in Lipetsk, the last one rolled off the production line in 1960. Also in 1958, the first wheel tractor was developed, which started production in 1960 as the T-30 . The model was later also referred to as the T-35.

A year later, in 1961, the most successful tractor the plant ever produced began. From the T-40 a total of nearly 1.2 million copies were built to 1995th

In 1988 the LTS-155 was presented. The vehicle, which is still in production today, has all-wheel steering, a centrally arranged cabin with large glass surfaces, all-wheel drive and an engine output of 150 hp (110 kW). From the mid-1990s, the LTS-55 and LTS-60 models were introduced as replacements for the T-40 ; the latter is still offered today in a modified design.

In 2004 the company went bankrupt. It was re-established under the name Lipetski Traktor as an open joint stock company and was bought by the Traktornyje Sawody concern. In 2009, part of the company was also outsourced to its own company, which today produces tracked vehicles again.
