The Wladimirski Traktorny Sawod , German Wladimirer Tractorwerk , WTS for short ( Russian Владимирский тракторный завод , ВТЗ for short) is a former Soviet and now Russian manufacturer of tractors and diesel engines. Founded in 1943, the company is based in Vladimir , Russia .

The Traktornyje Sawody concern bought the manufacturer in 2002. In 2003 the plant was renamed OOO "Wladimirski Motoro-Traktorny Sawod" , WMTS for short (Russian ОOО "Владимирский моторо-тракторный завод", ВМТЗ for short).

At the end of February 1943, the government of the Soviet Union passed the resolution to build a new tractor plant in Vladimir . The construction was complex, as not only machines and buildings were needed, but also a suitable infrastructure had to be created. Engineers were also withdrawn from the Red Army to support the construction project.

In July 1944 the first Universal U-2 tractors were assembled. These machines had already been manufactured in the Zavod Krasny Putilowez in Leningrad from 1934 to 1940 ; all construction plans and drawings were supplied from there. By the day of the inauguration of the plant, April 24, 1945, around 500 of the tractors had been built. The machines were simple and cheap to manufacture, but were prone to failure due to their petroleum engine. Some came to the German Democratic Republic in 1949 .

In 1947 the Universal series was revised, and the Universal U-3 and Universal U-4 were added until the end of production. The vehicles were replaced in 1955 by the DT-24 with a diesel engine . The vehicle was a completely new design and was built until around 1958. 10,000 copies were made in the first year of production alone.

In the first half of 1958, the newly designed T-28 "Wladimirez" replaced the DT-24 in mass production. The vehicle won a gold medal at the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels . As early as 1956, the Taschkentski Traktorny Sawod (TTS for short) in Tashkent , Uzbekistan, began producing a three-wheeled version for growing cotton . The T-28 was manufactured in this factory until 1995, with changes being made again and again. In Vladimir, on the other hand, production of the four-wheel version was discontinued in 1964, and production of the special version for cotton cultivation was finally handed over to TTS in 1970.

Production of air-cooled diesel engines began in the 1960s. Various tractor engines were built that were used in large-scale production in tractors. Tractors from the Lipetski Traktorny Sawod in particular were equipped with these engines. As a replacement for the production of the T-28, the Wladimierer Tractor Factory took over the production of the T-25 wheel tractor in 1972 , which had been built in the Kharkovsky Traktorny Sawod since 1966 .

In 1966, the plant received the Order of the Red Labor Banner as an award for particularly good plan fulfillment, and in 1976 it was awarded the Order of the October Revolution . The two millionth diesel engine was built on May 30, 1977, which has made WTS one of the largest producers of air-cooled diesel engines worldwide. Around 40% of the factory production was exported, and more than 60 countries were supplied.

At the beginning of the 1980s, a new generation of engines was developed. The three millionth engine was built in 1983, the four millionth in 1988. From around 1989, the T-30, an upgraded version of the T-25, was built, which is still offered today under a different name.

After severe economic problems due to the collapse of the Soviet Union , the plant presented the first equipment carrier from its own production in 1998 .

In 2002 the Traktornyje Sawody concern bought the plant, and in 2003 it was renamed OOO “Vladimirski Motoro-Traktorny Sawod” , WMTS for short (Russian ОOО “Владимирский моторо-тракторный завод”, ВМТЗ for short). As of the end of 2016, the manufacturer is still producing small and medium-sized tractors as well as implement carriers and diesel engines.

Products

In its history, the plant has produced various tractors and various diesel engines. The following list is only intended to give an overview of a selection of the most important types.

  • Universal U-1 to U-4 - First generation of tractors from Vladimir, some of which had already been built in Saint Petersburg. Produced from 1944 to 1955.
  • DT-24 - first diesel engine tractor developed by the factory, built from 1955 to 1958.
  • T-28 "Wladimirez" - wheel tractor, built from 1958 to 1970 in Vladimir and with modifications from 1956 to 1995 in the Tashkentsky Traktorny Sawod .
  • T-25 - Wheel tractor built from 1966, production taken over from Charkow in 1972.
  • AGROMASCH 30TK - updated version of the T-25.
  • AGROMASCH 50TK, 60TK and 85TK - small to medium-sized tractors from current production (2016).
  • AGROMASCH 30SSch and 50SSch - equipment carrier from current production (2016).
  • D-37 and modifications - four-cylinder diesel engine, for example, from 1961 to 1977 built in large numbers in the T-40 wheel tractor from the Lipetski Traktorny Sawod .
  • D-144 - four-cylinder diesel engine, installed in the T-40 from 1977 and later in the LTS-55 , both also from Lipetsk.
  • Diesel engines with outputs from 21 to 85 hp, including the D-144, are still manufactured today.
