The KD-35 ( Russian КД-35 ) is a Soviet chain tractor that was first manufactured in the Lipetski Traktorny Sawod from 1947 . There were various prototypes, the development of which goes back to the time of the Second World War . In addition, a special version for the cultivation of sugar beet was built under the designation KDP-35 . In total, almost 114,000 copies of the machines were made.

Vehicle history

For the Lipetsk tractor factory, which was under construction from 1943, the vehicle construction institute NATI developed a chain tractor called Kirowez-35 . Contrary to what the name suggests, the vehicle was never built in the Kirov factory (brand name Kirovets ), it was only given on an honorary basis to honor the factory that was enclosed by the Leningrad blockade at the time . The vehicles were equipped with a modified gasoline engine from the ZIS-5 truck , as no suitable diesel engine was available. Series production in the Lipetsky Traktorny Sawod began in December 1944.

To replace the gasoline engine, a test vehicle with a diesel engine was built by Caterpillar in September 1944 . However, it was not until 1947 that the serial production of the tractor, now known as the KD-35 (KD for Kirowez Diesel ), could begin. The number of units of the petrol-powered Kirovets-35 had remained low - in 1945 a total of 64 vehicles left the factory.

In 1950 the Minski Traktorny Sawod also began manufacturing the KD-35. However, since the plant was soon building other tractors, only 406 vehicles were built there. In August 1951, production of the KD-35 was stopped in Minsk after only nine months.

Also in 1950, the production of the KDP-35 began in Lipetsk . This particular variant of the KD-35 differed mainly in the crawler tracks. It was designed narrower and built in such a way that the ground clearance increased from 27.5 to 64 centimeters. This should make the tractor particularly suitable for use in beet cultivation. In fact, the design brought problems that could never be completely resolved. In 1958, the production of the KDP-35 was discontinued without replacement.

From the first half of 1959, the KD-35 received a more powerful D-40 diesel engine with a continuous output of 40 hp (29 kW). Production of the vehicles was discontinued in 1960, and a total of 113,600 KD-35 and KDP-35 models were built. The successor was the T-38 chain tractor , which was built into the 1970s.

Both the KD-35 and the KDP-35 came to the GDR . The first delivery of 246 machines went to the Soviet occupation zone and came at the beginning of April 1949. Tractors were also delivered later and used, among other things, for beet and potato harvest, often together with Soviet agricultural machinery. The chain tractors were used until the 1960s. So they were most likely the only tractors from Lipetsk that ever officially came to Germany.
