The MTZ-5 ( Russian МТЗ-5 , mostly transcribed MTS-5 in German-speaking countries , also known in combination with the brand name Belarus ) is a tractor that was first produced in the Minski Traktorny Sawod from 1957 . In 15 years, various manufacturers produced around 650,000 pieces. The GDR imported some tractors of this type before the MTZ-50 was available.

With the MTZ-7 , a version with all-wheel drive was also produced. However, production lasted only three years and the numbers produced remained low.

Vehicle history

The first prototypes of the MTZ-5 were produced in 1956 and 1957. The decisive factors were various deficiencies in the previous MTZ-2 model , which could only be remedied by a new design. This included, in particular, a top speed of only 13 km / h that was too low and an insufficient number of gear steps.

Series production of the machines began in Minski Traktorny Sawod in 1957. In 1958, the Juschny Maschinostroitelny Sawod (JuMZ) also began producing tractors. In 1962, production in Minsk was completely converted to the successor MTZ-50. In Dnipropetrovsk near JuMZ, however, it lasted until 1972. A total of 644,000 copies were produced in both plants.

From 1958 to 1961, the MTZ-7 was also manufactured at MTZ. This tractor was essentially the same as the MTZ-5, but with all-wheel drive. Experiments were carried out with parts from various other Soviet commercial vehicles in order to realize this, the numbers built remained small. The Juschny Maschinostroitelny Sawod did not take over the production either. The successor was the all-wheel drive version of the MTZ-50, the MTZ-52 .

The GDR imported the MTZ-5 until 1963, exact numbers are not known. Then the MTZ-50 was available.

Model variants

Several different versions of the vehicle were built during the production period.

  • MTZ-5 - basic version of the vehicle, mass-produced from 1957.
  • MTZ-5K - model with additional hydraulic unit for attachments.
  • MTZ-5L - model with a revised diesel engine of the type D40L and a single-cylinder gasoline engine as a starter. This made it possible to improve the machine's cold start capability in particular. In addition, the tractors were equipped with a simple alternating current generator, a starter battery was completely eliminated.
  • MTZ-5M - version with electric starter and DC alternator to charge the battery.
  • MTZ-5LS - Improved version of the MTZ-5L with an output of 48 HP (35 kW), whereby the working speed could be increased.
  • MTZ-5MS - Similar to the MTZ-5LS, improved version of the MTZ-5M.
  • MTZ-7 - All- wheel drive version of the MTZ-5 manufactured in various versions from 1958 to 1961. The front axle initially came from the GAZ-67 off-road vehicle , but it turned out to be too weak. Instead, the front axle of the GAZ-63 truck was later used . Series production began in 1958, and around 2800 units had been built by 1961.
  • Experimental versions with half-chain drive were built.

Dimensions and weights

  • Length: 4095 mm
  • Width: 1884 mm
  • Height: 1920 mm
  • Ground clearance: 450 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2450 mm
  • Front and rear track: 1200–1700 mm
