The MTZ-2 ( Russian МТЗ-2 , mostly transcribed MTS-2 in German-speaking countries , also known in combination with the brand name Belarus ) is a tractor that was developed in the Minski Traktorny Sawod . From 1953 it was built both there and in Juschny Maschinostroitelny Sawod , Ukraine , with a total of almost 150,000 copies made by 1958.

Under the designation MTZ-1 , a version was also produced in which the front wheels are only a few centimeters apart. This vehicle was designed for use in fields with tall plants, such as those found in cotton cultivation .

Vehicle history

At the end of May 1948, the Council of Ministers of the USSR commissioned Minski Traktorny Zavod to develop a wheel tractor with a diesel engine. The “D-35” engine used had already been used in tracked vehicles. Two variants were designed by October. The MTZ-2 was equipped with an ordinary front axle, while the distance between the two front wheels on the MTZ-1 was reduced to a minimum. This tractor was intended to be used in fields with higher crops, for example in cotton cultivation.

A first prototype was completed on July 18, 1949; it was also the first wheel tractor to be built in the Minsk plant. In the same year seven more prototypes were made.

Series production of the MTZ-2 began in October 1953 after successful tests. From December, the Yuzhny Maschinostroitelny Sawod in Dnipropetrovsk also manufactured tractors of this type. In 1956 the engine was redesigned, made one more horsepower and was called the "D-36".

Production continued in both plants until 1958, and a total of 148,800 tractors were built. The successor was the MTZ-5 . In 1997 the Belarusian Post honored the MTZ-2 with a stamp.
