The T-54W ( Russian Т-54В ) is a Soviet chain tractor that was produced from 1967 in the Kishinjowski Traktorny Sawod (German: Kischinauer Tractor Factory, КТЗ or KTS for short). It is the successor to the similar T-50W and was technically based on the well-known MTZ-50 wheel tractor from the Minski Traktorny Sawod . The vehicle is intended for work in viticulture and special crops.

Vehicle history

Different view of the same vehicle (2010)

The first tractor built in the Kischinjowski Traktorny Sawod was the T-50W, manufactured from 1962 onwards, which, depending on the source, is technically based on the MTZ-5 wheel tractor or even on the MTZ-50. From 1967 the T-54W based on the MTZ-50 was manufactured.

There were two versions of the T-54W that differed in track width. While it is 950 millimeters for the T-54W-S1, it is only 850 millimeters lower for the T-54W-S2. Narrower vehicles were intended for working widths between 1.5 and 2 meters, while wider vehicles were intended for working widths of more than two meters. The tractor uses the same engine and also the same transmission as the MTZ-50. There are also strong parallels in the design of the bonnet and cabin. However, unlike the wheel tractor, the T-54W has sliding doors.

In addition to the two versions of the T-54W with different track widths, the special versions T-54L and T-54S were also built. The T-54L was a forest tractor and was only produced briefly from 1969 to 1971. The T-54S, on the other hand, was designed for the beet harvest and, like the basic version T-54W, was produced from 1967 to 1974. From 1974, a successor based on the MTZ-80 was manufactured with the T-70 .

As part of a construction aid, all construction plans were made available to a manufacturer founded in 1965 in Karlovo , Bulgaria . He produced the T-54W with only minor technical adjustments under the nickname "Bolgar" from 1968 to 1972 under license.
