The T-74 ( Russian Т-74 ) is a Soviet chain tractor that was manufactured in the Charkowski Traktorny Sawod (short ХТЗ or ChTS) from 1962 . In just under 22 years of construction, around 880,000 copies of the vehicle were produced, which replaced the very similar predecessor DT-54 .

Vehicle history

As early as 1959, the Charkow tractor factory began manufacturing a new chain tractor . Outwardly, the vehicle with the designation T-75 hardly differed from the previously manufactured DT-54. However, a different engine with an output of 75 hp (55 kW) was installed. By 1962 45,800 T-75 chain tractors rolled off the assembly line in Kharkov , after which production was discontinued.

Production of the T-74 then began in April 1962. This tractor also has a diesel engine with 75 HP, but a different make was probably installed. The water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine has a displacement of 6330 cm³ and is started by means of a single-cylinder Otto engine . An electric starter was installed to start it. A manual six-speed gearbox with reverse and crawler gears served as the gearbox, although gearboxes with nine forward gears and three reverse gears were possibly also used.

In November 1983, serial production of the T-150 , the track version of the well-known T-150K wheeled tractor, began in Kharkov . Accordingly, production of the T-74 was discontinued in 1984. By then, 880,700 tractors of this type had left the factory, not including the almost 46,000 T-75s from 1959 to 1962.

In the course of the production history, different model variants of the tractor were built, which mainly differed in the hydraulic system . The numbering was done according to the scheme T-74-S1 to -S4, there was also a version -S9. The T-74-S3 was delivered without any hydraulics, the four other versions differed in the number and use of the working cylinders.
