The bulk carrier type Tsuneishi Economical Standard Ship 40 , TESS 40 for short , was built in Japan in a larger series and is considered one of the standard ships in its market segment.

details

The first TESS-40 series was designed from 1981 by the Japanese shipbuilding group Tsuneishi Zosen on behalf of the Norwegian shipping company Ugland and delivered from 1984. In the following years, the type developed into one of the most successful designs in its segment and established a series of further developed types that has continued to this day. From the mid-1990s was followed by the Type 45 TESS with greater carrying capacity, from 1999, the once powerful type TESS 52 , and in 2003 was from the TESS 52 essentially by the design to a larger depth of the type TESS 58 developed. In May 2014 the TESS 64 Aeroline, a further development of the TESS 58 with an increased load capacity of 63,700 tons, was presented. A total of over 300 units of the entire TESS series have been built so far.

The TESS-40-ships are as Handymax - bulk with aft arranged structures designed. They have five cargo holds and each cargo hold is served by its own hatch, the hatch covers of which are hydraulically operated. Four hydraulic ship cranes mounted amidships are available for cargo handling . The type of ship can transport approx. 43,300 tons with maximum unloading. The units are designed for the transport of various bulk goods , such as grain, coal, minerals, including various dangerous goods. The tank roof of the cargo hold is reinforced for the transport of ore. In addition, bagged goods, steel profiles, pipes and other bulk cargo, as well as containers, can be transported on deck.

The ships are powered by a two - stroke diesel engine . The engine enables a speed of around 14  knots . Several auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator are available.
