The TG (Turngemeinde) Bessungen 1865 Darmstadt eV is a sports club in Darmstadt . It is the largest association in the Darmstadt district of Bessungen and one of the largest and oldest in Darmstadt. The approximately 1100 members are divided between the handball , gymnastics , soccer , table tennis and volleyball / badminton departments .

history

The TGB Darmstadt was founded on June 11, 1865 by friends of the gymnastics movement . The first gymnastics lessons took place in the small halls of Bessunger restaurants and some time later you could also use the gym of the Bessunger boys' school. In 1881, the club bought a piece of land on Heidelberger Strasse as a gymnastics area for 2,200 marks. In 1890 the general assembly elected a "gym building commission", which in 1898 decided to build a sports hall (Bessunger gym) on the site. Construction work began in 1899 and the inauguration took place a year later on November 11, 1900. The initially small association has now grown into one of the largest Darmstadt associations. During the Second World War , in which the Bessunger gymnasium was also destroyed to the ground, club life came to a standstill. At the end of 1949 the club was re-established and the gym was rebuilt. The association grew steadily and new departments were founded.

In 1988 the association organized the first Bessunger district run. Since then, the running event has been held annually (from 2010 onwards, the Bessunger Merck Run) for the Bessunger Curb (see parish fair ) in the orangery . Financial difficulties forced the association to lease the Bessunger gymnasium to Comedy Hall GmbH. The hall has been the permanent venue of the Kikeriki Theater (puppet theater for children and adults) since March 1st, 1996. In 2000 the tennis department broke away from the club and has been the independent club TCB 2000 Darmstadt ever since . The association celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2015.
