history

Jakob Koch (1903)

Wilhelm Bloser, Jakob Knapp and Heinrich Thywissen jr. came up with the idea of founding the Neuss gymnastics club in the mid-19th century . The latter had got to know the club sport during a stay in England. The call to found the association appeared in the Neusser Handels- und Intellektivenblatt on July 5, 1848. On July 6, 1848, people gathered in the restaurant of the Schlömer host to found a gymnastics club for adults.

In 1892, shortly before a gymnasium was built, a dispute broke out, after which 20 members resigned and founded the Neusser Turnerschaft from 1892 . Among them was James Cook . After disagreements between the gymnastics council and gymnasts, 40 members resigned in 1903 and founded the general gymnastics and sports club from 1903 . In 1908 the women's department was founded. In the same year the member Fritz Hoffmann became the gymnastics festival winner at the German gymnastics festival in Frankfurt. In 1912 the association of the three Neuss gymnastics clubs was created, the forerunner of today's city sports association.

On March 21, 1936, the merger of the three clubs Neusser TV , Neusser Turnerschaft and General Gymnastics and Sports Club to form the gymnastics community Neuss from 1848 took place. On September 22, 1956, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new gymnastics home on Schorlemerstrasse took place. The building was inaugurated on July 6, 1957 and contained, among other things, an office, common rooms, restaurant, bowling alley and seven apartments. The club grew in the post-war decades. In 1995 it reached 5,120 members, in 2011 it had 5,694 active members. In 2015, the TG Neuss announced that it had over 5,800 members. The TG has a very successful basketball department with a female team in the second Bundesliga North, which is also affectionately known as the TG Neuss Tigers . The TG Neuss swimming department cooperates with the Neusser SV and forms the SG Neuss competition team.
