description

Vegetative characteristics

Hoya calycina forms climbing, winding, shoot axes several meters long that lignify at their base and branch out little. The bald, but also slightly to densely hairy shoot axes have a diameter of up to 6 millimeters and become corky with age. The elliptical to oval, slightly pointed leaves are quite large with 16 to 20 centimeters in length and 9 centimeters in width. The upper side is bare or covered with little downy hair, the underside tomentose to velvety hair (or bare with the ssp. Glabrifolia ). They sit on stems one to three cm long and 1.5 to 3.5 millimeters in diameter.

Generative characteristics

The up to 5 cm long inflorescence stem is more or less hairy. The upright inflorescence contains about ten flowers. The bracts are triangular to lanceolate with a length of 0.8 to 1 millimeter and a width of 0.5 to 1 millimeter. The flower stalk becomes about 4 inches long and is hairy.

The hermaphrodite flower is radially symmetrical and five-fold. The bell-shaped or star-shaped corolla has a diameter of 18 to 28 millimeters and a height of about 10 mm. The color of the corolla is brilliant white and its base varies from red to purple. The corolla lobes are lanceolate and pointed; hairy on the edge and outside (or glabrous in Dianthus seguieri subsp. glabrifolia ). The secondary crown measures about 4 millimeters × 7 to 13 millimeters. The flowers are open for about 10 days. They produce large drops of nectar and an intense fragrance reminiscent of musk .

Occurrence and systematics

Hoya calycina occurs in Indonesia ( Irian Jaya ) and Papua New Guinea . The holotype specimen was found blooming by Schlechter in March 1908 in the Kani Mountains ( Madang Province ) at an altitude of about 1100 meters.

Hoya calycina is divided into two subspecies by Hoffmann, van Donkelaar and Albers in Albers & Meve 2002:

  • Hoya calycina subsp. calycina Schlechter , Papua New Guinea
  • Hoya caycina subsp. glabrifolia P.I. Foster & Liddle , Papua New Guinea, Indonesia (Irian Jaya), leaves glabrous or slightly hairy on the underside, petals glabrous on the outside or only slightly hairy.
