TRIUMF (an acronym for Tri University Meson Facility ) is Canada's national research center for particle physics . Established in 1968, the research center is located on the southern part of the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus in Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada . It houses the world's largest cyclotron . The plant has been in operation since 1974 and was added to the IEEE Milestone list in 2010 .

The cyclotron's electromagnet is around 18 meters in diameter and weighs 4,000 tons. The protons are accelerated to a maximum of about 500 MeV ; their speed is then approx. 224,000 km / s. Besides particle physics, research areas are nuclear medicine and materials science .

450 researchers, engineers and other employees work at the site. There are also 150 students. Around 1,000 national and international researchers conduct research in the laboratory every year. The center is financially supported by three universities (hence the tri-in name): University of British Columbia , Simon Fraser University and University of Victoria .
