TV Maya
TV MAYA is a Guatemalan television broadcaster operated under the supervision of the Guatemalan Academy for Mayan Languages . It started broadcasting on April 23, 2008. With this channel, the indigenous population of Guatemala has for the first time access to programming on a television channel.
The slogan of TV Maya: " Un canal multicultural " (German: "A multicultural stations"), translated into the Itza 'language : " Uchunt t'oxb'o'oy yaab'wach'il ti paxil ".
The channel's program is aimed at spreading the millennial Mayan culture and promoting its values and languages. It is broadcast in Mayan languages with Spanish subtitles.
Initially, three half-hour programs are broadcast daily, one of which is aimed at children, one explains the Mayan calendar , and another provides information about the culture and languages of the indigenous people. Because of the station's limited financial resources, the program could initially only be received in four departments . From 2009 nationwide with a three-hour program every day. Today (2015) TV Maja broadcasts nationwide 24 hours a day, with the eight-hour program sequence repeated from 12 noon, 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.
TV Maya broadcasts on the exact same frequency used by the military dictatorship. Of the 200,000 people killed or disappeared under the military dictatorship , 83.33% were indigenous. It can also be received via livestream .
The broadcaster's general manager is Rafael Morales Irias.
The station does not receive any direct financial support from the state and the Academy for Mayan Languages that oversees it receives only 0.03% of the state budget for its services to the 22 indigenous communities and for the television station.
