Museu del Tabac
The Museu del Tabac ( Tobacco Museum) is a museum in Sant Julià de Lòria , Andorran , dedicated to the cultivation, processing and consumption of tobacco. The museum is located in the building of the former Reig cigar factory from the early 20th century, which was used as a tobacco factory from 1909 to 1957 and as such is typical of this type of building in Andorra.
history
In the past, Andorra was an agricultural country despite its mountainous location, but over the years agriculture has been largely limited to livestock farming, potato growing, and tobacco growing and processing. With the onset of mass tourism, tobacco growing was largely given up around 1990.
museum
The Julià Reig Ribó Foundation under the leadership of Òscar Ribas Reig took the initiative to found the Tobacco Museum. The museum is divided into three parts. The first exhibition area shows the tobacco harvest, transport to the factory, selection of tobacco leaves and fermentation . This is followed by the flavoring processes, the cutting, drying and production of the cigars , the cigar boxes and the cigar consumption. With a multimedia show, the museum documents how the “brown gold” has a decisive influence on the history of the country.
The museum is completed by a hall where temporary exhibitions and other activities take place. The museum also offers a range of service facilities such as a cafeteria, a museum shop, a terrace, a cloakroom and an extensive collection of documentation on the tobacco history of Andorra. The museum is financed by the Julia Reig Foundation, the Reig family and the Banca Reig.
In 2005, an 82-cent Museu del Tabac postage stamp was issued.
