The Tabin Wildlife Reserve is an approximately 1,200 square kilometer protected area in the Malaysian state of Sabah in the northeast of the island of Borneo . It was designated as a protected area in 1984 to protect the small Borneo elephants , the Borneo Banteng and the Sumatran rhinoceros .

The reserve extends from sea level to around 500 m. Until 1989, large areas of wood were felled in the area. Therefore, with the exception of an 80 square kilometer core zone and four reserves, so-called Virgin Jungle Reserves (VJR), where original primary forests still stand, the vegetation consists of secondary forest .

Almost all of Borneo's large animal species occur in the reserve. The elephant population is estimated at around 120 to 300 animals (as of 1993), plus Borneo Bantengs as well as sambar deer , muntjaks and Kantschile live in the area. Seven of Sabah's eight primate species are found in the area, including orangutans , Eastern Borneo gibbons, and proboscis monkeys , both of which have low population densities. The largest predator in Borneo, the Sunda clouded leopard, is just as indigenous as numerous smaller predatory species. In November 2019, the last known Sumatran rhinoceros in the Tabin Game Reserve died. This means that this species is considered extinct on Borneo. Outside the reserve at the nearby Sungai Segama there is a relatively large population of proboscis monkeys (approx. 1000 specimens).
