content

Kantarō Ichinomiya ( 一 ノ 宮 勘 太郎 ) is a young ethnologist and ghost hunter in the Taishō period , the early 20th century in Japan. He can see spirits and nature gods and has magical abilities. But he is friends with many spirits and tries to appease evil spirits by helping them. He lives on his ethnological books and payments for expelling ghosts. Yōko, a kitsune , is his servant because he gave her a name and has so attached her to himself.

For a long time Kantarō has been looking for the Oni- eating Tengu , from whose strength he wants to benefit. Finally, he can find him on an assignment, gives him the name Haruka ( 春華 ) and thus binds him to himself. From now on, Haruka helps Kantarō with his assignments, but is often tied into his plans without knowing about it. A powerful opponent of the two is Raikō Minamoto ( 源 頼 光 ), the government's ghost hunter, who would have liked to defeat the Oni-eating Tengu himself.

reception

The American critic Jason Thompson attests the manga " clever plots " and an interesting handling of Japanese folklore. The core of the story, however, is the "sweet, slightly suggestive relationship between Kan and Haruka: a little boy and his adult protector." The character design is kept in an anime-like style, typical and simple, but still allows for some picturesque backgrounds and details . Without violence and ugliness, with only a few conflicts, the series is “moving, easy reading” . The German magazine AnimaniA awards the manga "Witz und Charme" , which could also be transferred to the anime version. This is mainly due to the direction and the character design, which is based on the original. In Japan, the television series was well received by fans of the manga. In the Anime Encyclopedia , the series is assigned to the harem . But in tactics the harem is formed from traditional ghost figures, which gives the anime a special charm.
