Tadeusz Reytan

Tadeusz Reytan (born August 20, 1742 in Hruszówka, † August 8, 1780 ibid) was a Polish nobleman , patriot and member of the Polish Sejm , who became famous for his resistance to the First Partition of Poland .

Life

Reytan was a member of the city of Nowogródek and on April 19, 1773, at the first meeting of the Sejm, together with Samuel Korsak and Stanisław Bohuszewicz, opposed the motion of Sejm Marshal Adam Poniński for the constitution of a " Confederate Sejm", which should approve the division. Reytan questioned Poniński's legitimacy and refused to leave the boardroom. Because of this action, the court sentenced him to prison and confiscated his property. However, he stayed in the conference room and on April 21 opposed MPs who wanted to leave the room - this scene is captured in a famous painting by Jan Matejko . On April 22nd, he finally left the Sejm after guarantees from foreign ambassadors. He stayed in Warsaw until 1776 and then returned to his estate, where he died unmarried at the age of 38.
