Libraries Day

The Library Day was in Germany on 24 October 1995 under the auspices of Richard von Weizsacker declared. Since then, on this day, the libraries throughout Germany and, since 2009, also in South Tyrol have been drawing attention to their role as a knowledge store, information broker and cultural institution with special activities and events.

On the same day, the Karl Preusker Medal has been presented every year since 1996 as a non-material distinction to people and institutions that effectively promote the cultural mission of the library system and have distinguished themselves in the field of literature, publishing, the book trade, and public libraries.

On this day , the German Library Association also awards the “ Library of the Year ” prize, which honors exemplary and exemplary library work.

October 24 also commemorates the founding date of the Vaterländische Bürger-Bibliothek , which was set up by the royal Saxon rentier Karl Benjamin Preusker (1786–1871) on October 24, 1828 in Großenhain as a school library for teachers, pupils and the “commercial citizen class” . As the Hain city ​​library , it was expanded in 1832 according to Preusker's plans to become the first German citizens' library .
