The German Library Association awards since 2000 to the Zeit Foundation donated Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius Price Library of the Year at the Library Day and at the place of the winner.

The Library of the Year award is the national library award in Germany. This award is intended to contribute to the new image of the libraries. The award recognizes libraries of all types and sizes and is endowed with 20,000 euros (as of 2020).

In addition to the national library award, a prize worth 7,000 euros was awarded for the first time in 2020 for the library of the year in small municipalities and regions .

Above-average performance of any kind is awarded

  • customer-oriented service improvements
  • innovative ideas and their successful implementation in all areas of library activity: information service, user training, management, marketing, information services,
  • Document delivery, program for individual target groups or topics
  • effective public relations work for the library
  • Maintenance and development of the book as a cultural asset
  • particular success in the use of new technologies
  • committed involvement of partners (e.g. groups of friends)
  • Contributions to the optimization of library work
  • special ideas for the construction and furnishing of a library building
  • Participation in projects ( e.g. library index (BIX) and media competence centers ) and initiation of projects and joint ventures
  • Assumption of responsibility in the library system (e.g. holding conferences and assuming functions)
  • successful third-party funding initiatives
