The Day of the Republic of Turkey ( Turkish Cumhuriyet Bayrami ) is the most important national holiday in Turkey and recalls the proclamation of the Republic in 1923 . It lasts 35 hours and starts at 1pm on October 28th. It is also one of the most important holidays in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .

On October 29, 1923, Mustafa Kemal Pascha (Ataturk) declared that Turkey would from now on be a republic (جمهوریت / cumhūrīyet ) is.

In fact, Turkey was a republic from April 23, 1920 with the establishment of the Grand National Assembly in Ankara , but official recognition came only three years later. On October 29, 1923, an amending law established the republic as the form of government and the office of President of the Republic (رئيس جمهور / reʾīs-i cumhūr ) introduced. Thereafter, a vote took place in the Grand National Assembly and Mustafa Kemal Pasha was elected as the first President of the Republic of Turkey .

Since then, October 29 has been celebrated as Republic Day every year with parades, events at schools and cultural programs .
