Republic Day (India)

The Republic Day (Republic Day) is a national holiday in India on January 26 . Although India gained independence on August 15, 1947, the Constitution of India did not come into force until January 26, 1950. Until that day, the British monarch was head of state as Emperor of India . The republic , anchored in this constitution, gave the holiday its name.

To express the importance of this day, an annual military parade is held in the capital New Delhi on this day . It leads from a hill ( Raisina Hill ) in front of the Presidential Palace ( Rashtrapati Bhavan ) along the wide avenue (Rajpath) to India Gate and from there to the Red Fort in Old Delhi . The various regiments of the land, sea and air forces march in parade uniform, the Indian President, in his office Commander in Chief of the armed forces, receives the salute. The parade also includes a combat vehicle show, ship parade and traditionally ends with the flyby of the Indian Air Force jets.
