The Taganka Theater ( Russian Театр на Таганке ) is a well-known drama theater in the Russian capital Moscow . It is located in the center of the city, on the garden ring next to the Taganskaya metro station ( Tagansky district ).

history

The theater was founded in 1964 by Yuri Lyubimov , a director and teacher at Moscow's Shchukin Theater School . The troupe initially consisted of a few students from Lyubimov, the theater was originally called Moscow Theater for Drama and Comedy ( Московский театр драмы и комедии ), and the first play performed there was The Good Man by Sezuan by Bertolt Brecht . Over the years, thanks to good young actors and a broad repertoire, the theater gained popularity and repeatedly came into conflict with the state authorities, which had banned the performance of some plays. This led to Lyubimov's departure from the Soviet Union for the West in 1984 . After his return, however, he successfully campaigned for the preservation of the theater despite internal disputes among the theater troupe, which led to their splitting up in 1992.

In the years 1974-83 the theater was expanded to include an auditorium with 770 seats without interrupting the performances. The new building was designed by the architects J. Gnedowskij, A. Anisimow, A. Etschjeistow, B. Taranzow and S. Uljanowa.
