Weniamin Borissowitsch Smechow ( Russian Вениамин Борисович Смехов , born August 10, 1940 in Moscow ) is a Russian film and theater actor, theater director, voice actor and screenwriter and children's book author.

Life

Weniamin Smechow was born on August 10, 1940, the son of a professor and an internist. His uncle Lev Moissejewitsch Smechow (1908–1978) was a well-known book illustrator.

After finishing school (1947–1957) Smechov was accepted at the renowned Boris Shchukin Theater School. In 1961 he received his degree there, his diploma role was that of Covielle in MolièresThe citizen as nobleman ”.

From 1961 to 1962 Smechow initially worked at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Samara . In 1963 he moved to the newly founded Moscow Theater for Drama and Comedy, from which the Taganka Theater emerged in 1964 . Smechow worked there until 1985. During this time he played the role of the third god in Brecht'sThe Good Man of Sezuan ”, the role of Claudius in Shakespeare'sHamlet ” and the role of Woland in the stage adaptation of the novel “ The Master and Margarita ”by Mikhail Bulgakov . From 1986 to 1987 he played at the Sovremennik Theater and from 1988 to 1990 again at the Taganka Theater.

Smechow became known to the broad Russian audience primarily in the role of Athos in the musical film " D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers (1978) " and its three sequels (1992, 1993, 2008). In total, he played in more than 20 films between 1968 and 2008. He also dubbed the role of the witch Bastinda in the Russian cartoon adaptation of " The Wizard of Oz " and the role of the admiral in the popular cartoon "The Adventures of Captain Wrungel".

Weniamin Smechow also worked as an opera director. In 1991 he staged Prokofiev's opera "Die Liebe zu den Drei Orangen" at the Stadttheater Aachen, engaged by the then artistic director Klaus Schultz , and in 1993 the opera "Don Pasquale" by Gaetano Donizetti at the Mannheim National Theater in the artistic director Schultz. This production in the Rokokotheater Schwetzingen was taken over by Klaus Schultz in 1997 to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, after Smechov had staged the opera "Il Campiello" by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari there in 1996.
