Tagliata d'Incanal

Road block plan, drawn up by the kuk records bureau approx. 1889–1890

The Tagliata d'Incanal ( Incanal road block) with the associated annex battery “Batteria alta Incanal” (Upper Incanal battery) was built by the Italian army and completed in 1884.

The barrier was built from Veronese marble , which is covered with a layer of plaster. It is located at a height of 100 meters above sea level on the SP 11 (Strata provinziale - provincial road) between Monte Cordespino and the Adige . This enabled them to seal off the Incanal – Rivoli road and the area to the right of the river to the south. She was part of the fortress Group (Gruppo Rivoli) with the Forte San Marco and originally from Austria built Forte Rivoli , Forte Ceraino , Forte Monte and the roadblock Chiusa . The site belongs to the hamlet of Lubiara in the municipality of Rivoli Veronese .

The barrier itself consisted of a gate building and a defensive section attached to the left and right, designed as a casemate block with an inner courtyard on the river side . The extension on the mountain side consisted of only two retaining walls with rifle loops.

A ditch led from the right flank to the bank of the Adige , known as the connection battery. This trench also led around the entire structure. It was dry, about five meters wider and about four meters deep at the front and at the throat of the gate building it could be crossed on a drawbridge . This trench had a vertical wall at the front, the rear wall of the trench was sloped and raised by an earth wall. A covered path ran behind this earth wall, which also served as cover for any field artillery . The ditch was open to the Adige, and it was flooded during high tide. On the right face of the work, in the protruding corner of the throat, a throat box was attached for additional flank protection. The front had nine cannon slots, six of them at ground level and three raised in the actual gate construction, as well as ten level gun slots, all in the gate area. In the throat there were eight cannon slots and 15 gun slots in a similar arrangement. Six cannon loops (two at trench level, two at surrounding level and two elevated above the postern of the gate building) covered the trench in the direction of the banks of the Etsch.

The “Batteria alta d'Incanal” was built on the rock face, slightly set back and elevated, as a rear, detached work. The battery had three levels of fire, the lowest one consisted of 15 rifle slots in groups of three, the middle one from five gun slots and the top one from a wall placed on the roof with two hollow crossbars for the installation of field guns.

Behind the Batteria alta d'Incanal was an ammunition bunker in a covered position.

Current condition

When the road was widened (probably in the 1960s), the gate was demolished except for the right outer wall area. The casemate block is still partially in place, but large parts of the rear area were also torn down. There are only small remains of the defensive walls on the mountain side. There is nothing left of the digging of the connection battery. The Batteria alta d'Incanal is ruinous, but in its entirety it is still complete. Today the route of the Brenner motorway runs over the former ditch of the connection battery.

annotation

The plan was drawn up by the kuk Evidenzbureau (department for enemy reconnaissance). The top view does not exactly correspond to the actual conditions, since the interior of the casemate block was not designed symmetrically , as indicated , but asymmetrically.
