Taher Elgamal ( Arabic طاهر الجمل, DMG Ṭāhir al-Ǧamal ; *  August 18, 1955 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian cryptologist .

Life

He studied electrical engineering at Cairo University , where he graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree . At Stanford University he received a Master of Science and Ph.D. in computer science .

In 1985 he published his article A Public Key Cryptosystem and a Signature Scheme based on Discrete Logarithms , in which the Elgamal cryptosystem named after him is described. His numerous contributions to cryptology include the Digital Signature Algorithm , the credit card payment system SET and the SSL protocol.

Taher Elgamal worked as chief scientist for Netscape from 1995 to 1998 .

In 1998 he founded his own company ( Securify Inc ), which deals with computer security.

He serves on the boards of several computer companies and is a director of RSA Security . He has been the CTO of Salesforce.com since 2013 .

For 2019 he was awarded the Marconi Prize together with Paul C. Kocher .
