The Taieri Ridge , like the Rock and Pillar Range, is a broken clod mountain range on the eastern edge of central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The Taieri Ridge is located approximately 60 km north-northwest of Dunedin , where the mountain range extends for approximately 30 km in a southwest-northeast direction along the fault of the Taieri Ridge Fault , also known as the Horse Flat Road Fault and extending up to to the Kakanui Mountains . The Taieri River , which crosses the Strath Taieri plain, passes east of the mountain range . The two huge gold mining fields of Macraes Flat are still in the catchment area of the Taieri Ridge in the east . Politically, the mountain range is divided between the Waitaki District and the Central Otago District .

nature and landscape

The gentle ridge line of the Taieri Ridge extends over 600–700 m. The western slopes are gently sloping in spite of the rugged incisions, whereas the eastern side rises steeply. In terms of landscape, the elevation does not promise anything exciting. For geologists, however, the approx. 20 million year old crater in the south-eastern part of the ridge is interesting.

Wherever possible, the slopes are used for sheep breeding , whereas the rest of the landscape is still dominated by tussock grass . The rocks lying around with their sometimes bizarre formations offer the smooth lizard (Scincidae) ideal protection. In addition to numerous insect species, the Maori falcon (Falco novaeseelandiae) should be mentioned as a species of birds .

use

In addition to the farm economy and the sheep are still a few scientists in the field of Geology of the University of Otago in the area interested, but offers the 700 m wide and 1000 m long crater students from Dunedin appropriate study material.
