Tail Dragger (* 30th September 1940 in Altheimer , Jefferson County , Arkansas as James Yancey Jones ) is an American blues singer .

Life

Like so many other greats in Chicago, he was born in the southern United States, where he grew up with his grandparents. Although he appreciated the blues of the south, the Chicago blues remained his great interest. When you hear him, you can see the influence Howlin 'Wolf has had on him.

In 1966 he moved to Chicago, but first worked as a mechanic. His breakthrough as a musician came when he was allowed to perform with his idol Howlin 'Wolf . Wolf also gave him his stage name Tail Dragger ("to drag one's tail (over something)" means something like "dawdle at something", "delay something"), as he often came too late to perform. Previously he was known as "Crawlin 'James" as he was often lying on the ground when performing. The collaboration enabled Tail Dragger to build a reputation among Chicago blues artists. This became visible when he sang in his own bands at the beginning of the 1970s. B. Willie Kent , Hubert Sumlin , Carey Bell , Mack Simmons , Big Leon Brooks, and Eddie Shaw included.

In 1993 he shot and killed his fellow musician Bennie Joe Houston ("Boston Blackie") in an argument allegedly over fees. Jones claimed he acted in self-defense but was jailed for 17 months for negligent homicide.

Despite being a fixture on the club scene since arriving in Chicago and having released various singles, it wasn't until 1996 that he recorded his first album, Crawlin 'Kingsnake St. George. American People , his second album, was released in 1989 by Delmark. Delmark also released a DVD in 2005, My Head Is Soon: Live at Vern's Friendly Lounge, in 2009 Live at Rooster's Lounge was released on DVD and audio CD, the DVD received the Living Blues Award 2010 for best DVD of the year.
