Taiwan Return Day

The Taiwan-return tag ( Chinese  臺灣光復節  /  台湾光复节 , pinyin Taiwan guāngfùjié , Zhuyin ㄊ ㄞ 'ㄨ ㄢ ㄍ ㄨ ㄤ ㄈ ㄨ' ㄐ ㄧ ㄝ ' ) is an annual day of remembrance in the Republic of China (Taiwan) to which commemorates the liberation of Taiwan and the Penghu Islands from the occupation by Japan (1895–1945) on October 25, 1945 . As a result of the defeat of the occupying power Japan in World War II , the islands of Taiwan and Penghu were handed over to the Republic of China on that day . Taiwan Return Day is one of the two most important public holidays in the Republic of China , along with the National Day.

The Communist People's Republic of China has not yet been able to enforce its claims on the islands of Taiwan and Penghu (see Taiwan conflict ).
