Takahashi Seiichirō

Takahashi Seiichirō ( Japanese 高橋 誠一郎 ; born September 9, 1884 in Niigata ( Niigata Prefecture ); died February 9, 1982 in Tōkyō ) was a Japanese economist and art connoisseur.

Live and act

Takahashi Seiichirō graduated in 1908 from the political department of Keiō University . He then taught the basics of economics and economic history at his university. In 1911 he studied abroad in England, in 1914 he became a professor and in 1944 he retired.

In 1947, Takahashi took over the Ministry of Education in the Yoshida cabinet and promulgated the Basic Education Act and the School Education Act, which passed the 6-3 school system. He is also known as the researcher who collected ukiyo-e.

Takahashi held important positions in the field of cultural studies, including as a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1947, as director of the Academy of Arts , as director of the Tokyo National Museum , as chairman of the "Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property" and as deputy Chairman of the Japan Economic Association (日本 経 済 学会, Nihon keizai gakkai).

In 1962 Takahashi was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 1979 he was awarded the Order of Culture .
