The Mam language (Qyol mam) is the language of the Mam indigenous people in Guatemala and, with around half a million speakers, is one of the most widely spoken Mayan languages .
distribution
The Mam-language area covers large parts of the highlands of Guatemala, especially in the departments of Huehuetenango , Quetzaltenango and San Marcos as well as in the Mexican state of Chiapas . Aside from a few remote areas, most mam speakers also have some command of Spanish .
In the 2002 census, 477,717 (4.6%) said Mam was their mother tongue; 617,171 (5.5%) identified themselves as Mam .

Until recently, SIL International ran the regional variants as separate languages:

- Takanek (Tacaneco) [mtz]
With the 16th edition of the Ethnologue , however, these codes were merged with the code [mam] (Mam).
