Take Me Out to the Ball Game is a song that was written on Tin Pan Alley in the early 20th century and became the unofficial anthem of baseball in the decades that followed . Traditionally the song is played in ball stadiums around the world during the seventh-inning stretch .

The song is in the original text from 1908 about a young girl ("Katie Casey") who is supposed to be taken to a show by her boyfriend, but would rather be accompanied by him to a baseball game. In the similarly widespread text from 1927, the girl (here: "Nelly Kelly") is invited by her boyfriend to Coney Island , but instead requests a visit to the ball park.

history

The original text was written by Jack Norworth , a vaudeville star , while on a subway ride in 1908 . He was inspired by an advertisement promoting a baseball game at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan . Then the American music producer Albert Von Tilzer wrote music for the words that were already there. The song became an instant hit and was one of the most successful pieces of music in the United States in 1908.

Occurrence in other media

The episode 7x04 "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" of the Star Trek series Deep Space Nine refers to this song in its title and in its subject matter. The main characters of the science fiction series contest preparatory training and a baseball game against a team of extraterrestrial creatures called Vulcans on a holographic baseball field (created in three dimensions by computer).

Versions

The song, at least the chorus of the song, has been recorded countless times by various artists in the more than 100 years since it was first written. The original text and the music from 1908 are now public domain in the USA . Outside the USA, the song is mostly in the public domain due to the comparison of the protection periods , in Germany the music is protected by copyright until the end of 2026 and the original text until the end of 2029. Nevertheless, worldwide use without the payment of royalties is a matter of course.

At least the tune has been and is very often used in movies and TV series whenever baseball is in any way the subject. The song can be found several times in the American cartoon series The Simpsons or in the miniseries Kingdom Hospital . In the 1949 film Take Me Out to the Ball Game named after the song, the leading actors Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra sing the first verse of the 1927 version.

In the mid-1990s, major league baseball versions were recorded by artists of various genres as part of an advertising campaign . This is how, among other things, an alternative rock version of the Goo Goo Dolls was created .
