The Tal Monument is a monument to the Latvian chess player Mikhail Tal in the Latvian capital Riga .

It is located in the Wöhrmannschen Garten northeast of Riga's old town.

The monument was created by the sculptor Oleg Skarainis and inaugurated on August 10, 2001. Guntis Sakne and Liene Šterna worked as architects . A 2.8 meter high monument was created from two blocks of light and dark granite . The different colors of the granite blocks symbolize the white and black fields of the game of chess. A vertical gap is worked into the blocks, in which there is a bronze bust representing a valley . Below the bust is the inscription of Mihail Tal's name . On the back of the monument there is an inscription that refers to Tal as the world chess champion , the initiators of the monument, the sculptor and the date of its unveiling in Latvian .

The reason for the location of the monument was the fact that the Wöhrmannsche Garten was a popular place for amateur chess players to play in the 1950s to 1980s. The unveiling took place on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the city of Riga in 2001.
