A talisman shirt ( Turkish tılsımlı gömlek ) is a piece of clothing that serves as a talisman . Talisman shirts can be found throughout the Islamic culture . The shirts can be divided into four types, which differ in style and motif: Ottoman , Safavid , Mughal and West African.

The earliest surviving shirts were made around the 15th century. However, the tradition of talisman shirts is probably much older. In the twelfth sura of the Koran, a shirt gives protection to the prophet Yusuf and is even miraculous. Yusuf hands it over so that it can heal his father Jacob from his blindness: "Take this shirt of mine with you and put it on my father's face, then he can (again) see!"

The shirts are often inscribed with verses from the Koran, names of Allah and prophets and with numbers and bear pictures or symbols, for example astrological. The inscriptions with names are intended to give the wearer protection and guidance. While talisman shirts can be worn against many evils, most are arguably intended as protection in battle.
