Jana Krishnamurthy
Jana Krishnamurthy (other spelling: Jana Krishnamurthi ; Tamil ஜனா கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி ; * May 24, 1928 in Madurai , today Tamil Nadu ; † September 25, 2007 in Chennai , Tamil Nadu) was an Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who was led by 2001 to 2002 President of the BJP, between 2002 and his death in 2007 a member of the Rajya Sabha and from 2002 to 2003 Minister for Law and Justice in the Vajpayee III cabinet . He was one of the most famous Tamil politicians in India .
Life
Krishnamurthy, son of a lawyer , first completed an undergraduate degree after attending school , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A subsequent postgraduate studies of law at the University of Madras , he joined in Chennai with a Bachelor of Laws from (LL.B.). During his studies, he was involved in the radical - Hindu , hierarchically structured cadre organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (BJS). He then took up a job as a lawyer in his native Madurai in 1956.
In February 1968 he gave up his legal practice and became a full-time employee of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) after Deendayal Upadhyaya's successor as President of the BJS, Atal Bihari Vajpayee , asked him to work in the headquarters of this party, which was founded in 1951 , after Deendayal Upadhyaya's death has been. In 1975 he became president of the BJS in the state of Tamil Nadu. After the BJS was absorbed into the Janata Party in 1977 , he became General Secretary of the Janata Party in the state of Tamil Nadu and held this position even after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was founded in December 1980. In the following years he also took on numerous other functions within the BJP and was last vice president of the party from 1986 to 2001.
After Bangaru Laxman had to resign from his office as president of the BJP on March 14, 2001 because of the so-called Tehelka Tapes affair, Krishnamurthy took over the office of president of the party and held this office until he was replaced by Venkaiah Naidu on July 1, 2002 .
In April 2002, Krishnamurthy became a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament , for the BJP and was a member of it as representative of the state of Gujarat until his death on September 25, 2007.
On July 3, 2002, Krishnamurthy was appointed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to succeed Arun Jaitley as Minister of Law and Justice in his third government and held this office until January 29, 2003. He was then succeeded by Arun Jaitley. One of his closest collaborators was the then Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice, Ravi Shanker Prasad .
During his membership in the Rajya Sabha, he then temporarily acted as chairman of the petitions committee, which dealt among other things in August 2005 with the adulteration of gasoline. Most recently he largely withdrew from political life and did not take part in the BJP Executive Committee meeting in Chennai in September 2005.
