Tally was an American manufacturer of printers . The company was founded in Kent , Washington , United States in 1949 and first manufactured paper tape readers . In 1970 Tally moved into the printing industry and produced dot matrix printers . In 1972 Mannesmann Präzisionstechnik was founded as a subsidiary of Mannesmann AG , specializing in matrix printers. 1979 Tally and Mannesmann Präzisionstechnik merged to Mannesmann Tally and became part of the Mannesmann Kienzle Computer group .

Mannesmann Tally now offered printer solutions and services in all major technologies in all key markets. The printers that provided APL letters were produced in collaboration with IP Sharp Associates to support their international sharing network. The flexible, though competitive, method of pen ignition allowed the full APL set of letters as well as an increased set of universal (worldwide) glyphs to be printed. When Tally improved parts of its management in 1996, they bought themselves out of Mannesmann with the help of Legal & General Ventures. The company's headquarters were in Elchingen , and subsidiaries and partners existed in more than 130 countries. Matrix printers and inkjet printers were produced in Elchingen, line printers and color printers in Kent.

In 2003 Tally merged with GENICOM to form TallyGenicom . In 2009, the TallyGenicom brand was acquired by Printronix . The intellectual property and the worldwide distribution rights for the TallyGenicom matrix, inkjet and thermal printers were retained by TallyGenicom AG and acquired by DASCOM in June 2009. DASCOM Europe now markets the products of the former TallyGenicom brand under the brand name Tally.
